South African Airways (SAA) is the largest and most important African airline and has received numerous “Best African Airline” awards from different leading magazines and international organizations. The airline was founded 1934 and celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2009. It was one of the first national airlines worldwide.

The customer always ranks first at SAA. Each employee attends intensive advanced training programmes to assure a customer-friendly ambience on all SAA flights. The airline rejoined the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in April 2003 enabling SAA to improve the aeronautical infrastructure and to support the “open skies” strategy within Africa.

SAA is owned by the public transport company Transnet. Two percent of the stocks are held by the 8 305 employees of the airline. SAA carries more than 8 million passengers per year on its route network serving 26 cities in 22 countries. According to Skytrax, the British experts on aviation rankings, SAA is one of the best international airlines regarding product offer and service standards. Also the Premium Class seats (Business Class) of SAA are consistently voted the best reclining seats of their class worldwide.

SAA’s fleet consists of 53 aircrafts including new Airbus A340-600, A340-300e and A319. Many leading airlines are customers of SAA Technical, the largest and most advanced maintenance provider on the African continent..
