Be warned, though: Portuguese are quite fond of fish. Which is a good thing, as you’ll find out for yourself if you indulge yourself in one of the many fish specialties available on menus everywhere in

Having breakfast in

Lisbon can be quite a treat if you go to the right restaurant. For instance, you could try one of the following: 

• Antiga Casa dos Pastéis de Belém

Address: Rua de Belém, 90

Info: This is the place for you if you’re into the coffee and pastry kind of breakfast. In fact, there are some wonderful tart things called pasties-de-nata here, and they did become quite famous in the right circles.

 

• Pastelaria Suiça

Address: Praça Dom Pedro IV

Info: A lighter breakfast is what you’ll get here, with delicious fruit juices on the side. Another key advantage is the view of Castelo de Sao Jorge that you’ll get from the terraces. Besides, you’ll get to watch local businessmen stop here for a quick breakfast as they go to work and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that, unlike these poor souls, you’re here on holiday and just for the fun of it.

 

    

Lunching with the fishes

At lunchtime,

Lisbon is even better at providing (mostly fish-related) eating opportunities. Of which some of the best are to be found at:

Info: This place offers a traditional perspective on lunch dishes. It goes quite well with the rustic atmosphere - you know, wagon-wheel chandeliers and the like. The Lautasco fresh fish is especially good.

 

• Funil

Lisbon with your entire family hanging on to you, the Funil is a good choice for the all-favorite family lunch. Lisbon , nothing can be more welcome than a tasty dinner, Lisbon-style. Some suggestions:

   

• Bota Alta

Info: This is a lively restaurant and you must still have a bit of energy left to fully enjoy the feel of the place, the artsy décor. In addition to some typical Portuguese dishes, the ever-changing menu also provides some rarer treats (for

Lisbon ), such as Hungarian goulash. Codfish dishes are inevitably part of the show as well, popular among tourists as they are.      

• D’Avis

Address: Rua do Grilo, 96-98

Info: More on the classically quiet and quaint dinner restaurant, D’Avis still manages to put you at ease with its casual atmosphere. And if you’re a bit tired of gorging on so many fish dishes, you can order a scrumptious roast pork and clams recipe. As for soup choices, you may try the acorda, a thick thing composed of bread, oil and lots of seasonings.

   

So there you go. Of course,

Lisbon is positively crawling with excellent restaurants and bars so you are by no means limited to the places described above.
